Overview

1963 Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL W112 (Automatic / 4 Gears) RWD [1963-1965]

The 1963 Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL marked the introduction of the long-wheelbase (L-Lang) variant in the W112 series, becoming the most prestigious and abundant limousine of the time. This vehicle is powered by the M189 engine, a 2996 cm3 Gasoline engine with aluminum block and mechanical injection Bosch, which produces 160 hp / 158 hp/ 117.5 kW at 5000 rpm and a 251 Nm torque at 3800 rpm. With a 100mm increase in wheelbase to offer maximum space for rear passengers, this model comes equipped with a 4-speed automatic transmission and legendary pneumatic (airborne) suspension. Although the weight was increased to 1,600 kg , the 300 SEL reaches a top speed of 180 km/h and offers a level of refinement that made it the preferred choice of diplomats and state leaders.

Summary

Experts see the 300 SEL as the direct ancestor of the modern S-Class Lang, notably appreciating the combination of added space with the unmatched comfort of air suspension. While the M189 engine offers enough power for the added weight, the revisions emphasize that this version requires even greater attention to the pneumatic system due to the higher load. The main criticism remains the high fuel consumption and astronomical cost of aluminum block parts, but for its era, it remained the vehicle that set the new standards for six-cylinder luxury limousines.
