Overview

1963 Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL W112 (Manuals / 4 Gears) RWD (1963-1965)

The 1963 Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL with manual transmission was the rarest and most dynamic variant of the long-haul wheelbase (lang) limousine. This vehicle is powered by the legendary M189 engine, a 2996 cm3 Gasoline engine with aluminum block and mechanical injection Bosch, which produces 160 hp / 158 HP / 117.5 kW at 5000 rpm and a 251 Nm torque at 3800 rpm. Combining 100mm of added space in the rear with a 4-speed manual gearbox , this car offered more direct control over engine power compared to the automatic versions. Equipped with standard pneumatic suspension and four-wheel disc brakes, the 300 SEL manual achieved a top speed of 185 km/h and accelerated from 0-100 km/h in 9.8 seconds .

Summary

Experts appreciate this model for the unique balance between the extreme comfort of the rear passengers and the sporty reaction that the manual gearbox offers in cooperation with the aluminum engine. Although it is a heavy-duty vehicle, the air suspension keeps driving characteristics at superior levels, making the limousine feel lighter at turns. The main criticisms remain of the complexity of the Bosch injection system and the financial risks posed by the maintenance of the pneumatic system after six decades, as specific parts of the SEL model are extremely rare and expensive.
