Summary

This version of the post-September 1969 280 SE Coupe is known as the "Flachkühler" because of its lower grille, a change needed to standardize the look with the new V8 model. The in-line six-cylinder engine offers an excellent balance between performance and reliability, being considered by many to be the best engine for everyday use in this chassis. The 4-speed automatic gearbox is designed for maximum comfort, although it does penalize a bit of acceleration compared to the manual variant. The most distinctive feature remains the open B-pillar cabin, which offers a panoramic view when all the windows are seated, making this model one of the most desirable Grand Tourers of its era.
