The 1970 Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 3.5 with automatic transmission was the symbol of technological luxury, introducing the new V8 electronic injection engine to the long-haul SEL chassis. This vehicle is powered by the modern M116 E35 engine, a 3499 cm3 Petrol unit with Bosch D-Jetronic electronic injection, which produces 200 hp / 197 hp/ 147 kW at 5800 rpm and a 286 Nm torque at 4000 rpm. Equipped with a 4-speed automatic transmission and legendary pneumatic (airborne) suspension, this sedan offered a stress-free ride at a top speed of 205 km/h . Summary

Experts rate the 300 SEL 3.5 automatic as the perfect balance between the performance of the V8 engine and the high comfort offered by the W109 chassis. The M116 engine is known for its durability, but the first D-Jetronic electronic injection system requires qualified specialists to be serviced correctly. As in the entire W109 series, air suspension is the "Achilles' heel"; although it offers an unparalleled softness, the failure of air cushions or compressor can bring extremely high costs. Criticism is often directed at high fuel consumption, especially when the automatic gearbox is combined with the weight of the SEL variant.
