The 1970 Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 3.5 for the North American market was Germany’s technological response to American demand for V8 power and uncompromising luxury. This vehicle used the new M116 E35 engine, a 3499 cm3 petrol unit with Bosch D-Jetronic electronic injection, which according to SAE measurements produced 230 hp / 233 PS / 171.5 kW at 6050 rpm and a 314 Nm torque at 4200 rpm. Equipped with standard 4-speed automatic transmission and legendary pneumatic air suspension, this long-wheel drive (SEL) variant offered stability and comfort that rivaled the world’s best limousines. With a top speed of 205 km/h and a 0-60 mph acceleration in 9.5 seconds , the 300 SEL 3.5 was one of the fastest and most prestigious cars on American roads of the time.
