Overview

1970 Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL W109 (Manuals / 5 Gears) RWD [1966-1972]

The 1970 Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL with 5-speed manual transmission represented the pinnacle of mechanical refinement for the W109 series with long wheelbase. This model used the state-of-the-art M130 E28 engine, a 2778 cm3 Bosch Mechanical Injection Gasoline unit, which produces 170 hp / 168 HP / 125 kW at 5750 engine rpm and a 240 Nm torque at 4500 rpm. This version was equipped with the rare ZF S5-20 gearbox, which thanks to the fifth gear “overdrive” allowed quieter and more economical journeys on the highway, while maintaining the maximum speed of 195 km/h . Like any real SEL, it offered the royal comfort of pneumatic (airborne) suspension and added space for rear passengers, making it one of the most desirable limousines of the time.

Summary

specs consider this configuration to be the "great sanctity" for the collectors of the W109, as the 5-speed ZF gearbox is extremely rare and sought after. The 2.8L M130 engine is valued for its higher reliability compared to early 3.0L aluminum engines, while the fifth gear gives the car an elasticity that makes it feel modern even in today's traffic. However, specialists point out that the cost of maintaining the air suspension and the rarity of parts for the ZF truck require a considerable budget and a dedicated owner.
