Overview

1978 Mercedes-Benz 280 S W116 (Manuals / 4 Gears) RWD [1972-1980]

The 1978 Mercedes-Benz 280 S represented the basic model of the prestigious S-Class W116 series in Europe, offering a combination of high engineering with the simplicity of the carburetor. This vehicle is powered by the M110 engine, a 2.8-liter (2746 cm3) DOHC unit (with two bump axles) equipped with a complicated Solex 4A1 carburetor . It produces 156 PS / 154 hp / 115 kW at 5500 engine rpm and a torque of 223 Nm . Although it was the original line-up model, the 280 S offered the same build quality and safety as the V8 models, including double wishbone front suspension and Paul Bracq’s iconic design. Equipped with 4-speed manual gearboxes, this sedan reaches a top speed of 190 km/h and accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 11.5 seconds .

Summary

Experts rate the 280 S as a car with high mechanical reliability, but the Solex 4A1 carburetor is known as the "Achilles' heel" because of its complexity and tendency to deform from heat over time. The M110 DOHC engine is a masterpiece of durability, but requires periodic adjustment of the valves. The starting price in Germany at the time of launch (circa 1973) was approximately 24,750 Deutsche Mark (around €12,650 at the fixed conversion rate), making it the most accessible entry into the world of the S-Class. Today, this model is preferred by purists who want a classic driving experience without the early electronic injection systems.
