Summary

Experts rate this version of the 450 SE as the culmination of the 4.5L engine, where Bosch K-Jetronic injection optimization boosted power without sacrificing reliability. Although fuel consumption remains high (almost 16 litres per cycle combined), this car offers a driving experience that few could rival in the late 1970s. The starting price in April 1978 was around 36,900 Deutsche Mark (approximately €18,900), reflecting the technical improvements and high value of the vehicle. Today, these latest specimens of the W116 series are highly sought after due to the maximum mechanical refinement prior to the transition to the W126 series.
