Overview

1982 Mercedes-Benz 280 S W126 (Manuals / 5 Gears) RWD [1979-1985]

The 1982 Mercedes-Benz 280 S with 5-speed manual gearbox is an optimized variant of the W126 series, which aimed to offer the prestige of an S-Class with higher fuel efficiency. This model is powered by the legendary M110 engine, a 2.8-liter (2746 cm3) dual-axle humpback unit ( DOHC ), which in this configuration uses the Solex 4A1 carburetor to produce 156 PS / 115 kW . The main feature of this version is the 5-speed Getrag 265 gearbox , where the fifth gearbox serves as an “overdrive,” reducing engine rides on the highway and significantly improving fuel consumption compared to the 4-speed version. With a time-advanced aerodynamic coefficient of 0.37 , the 280 S offers a smooth, sustainable and highly economical ride for its size.

Summary

Experts rate the 5-speed variant of the 280 S as the most rational choice of time for long journeys. Based on ProfessCars™ estimates, performance remains solid with a 0-100 km/h acceleration for 10.6 seconds, while consumption figures (combined 13.2 L/100km) provide a realistic overview of the cost of operation. The Getrag significantly improves the acoustics in the cabin by keeping the engine laps low at highway speeds. The starting price in 1981 for this model was around 36,100 Deutsche Mark (approx. €18,450). Today, this model is considered rare and prized for its mechanical simplicity and the iconic design of Bruno Sacco.
