Overview

1993 Mercedes-Benz 300 SD W140 (Automatic / 4 Gears) RWD [1991-1994]

The 1993 Mercedes-Benz 300 SD for the US market represents a unique combination of the extreme luxury of the W140 series with diesel engine efficiency. This model was the first S-Class diesel limousine to be offered globally (initially for the US), using the well-known 3.5-liter Turbo-Diesel (OM603) six-cylinder in-line engine. With a power of 148 hp , this vehicle was not designed for dizzying speeds, but for an extremely smooth ride and long autonomy thanks to the 100-litre tank. The Cathedral’s royal construction, together with its double glazing and refined acoustic insulation, make the characteristic oil noise almost inaudible inside the cabin, offering the S-Class’s royal comfort at a lower fuel cost.

Summary

Experts rate the 300 SD as one of the most interesting tools of the era, as it brought the concept of "sustainable" luxury to the US market. According to ProfessCars™ estimates, the performance is modest for an S-Class with a 0-100 km/h acceleration of 14.7 seconds, but the 310 Nm torque that at 2000 revs makes moving around the city quite easy. The consumption of 10.1 L/100km (21 mpg) was impressive for a car that weighed over 2 tonnes in 1993. The starting price in the US for this model was around $64,000 (approximately €49,500 at the time). Although the 3.5 Turbo-Diesel engine has had its historical challenges with temperature, this model remains an icon of comfort and a testament to the engineering courage of Mercedes-Benz.
